Photos and presentation slides: Citizen budget workshop

Three face-to-face public participation budget meetings were held in Edina this week. I attended the one last night at the Edina Public Works & Park Maintenance Facility.

Stacy Becker, Project Director at the Citizens League, moderated the meeting.  After presenting an overview of the City’s budget, Stacy asked the participants a series of questions and then directed each small group to discuss it among themselves.

After each discussion period, everyone was asked to respond (via individual clickers) to a quick poll presented on a screen. After everyone voted, the results were displayed for all to see.

A report of all the responses and poll results will be compiled and presented to the Council next week… and posted here on the blog as well.

We’ll replicating this entire process online during the Budget Webinar on Sunday night.  Hope to see you there!

11/8 update: Here’s the Powerpoint presentation from the workshop:

MPR’s Dave Peters attended the meeting and has a blog post about it:

When forced to choose, how do you decide?

Even so, as Mayor James Hovland said afterward, it was a good start on improving how Edina makes its choices. “We’re trying to tap the collective intelligence in the community,” said city manager Scott Neal.

Beyond all the immediate decisions about property taxes and street repair and police protection, how to do that is really the most interesting question.

If you want to see this in action, especially if you’re in Edina, you can join a webinar Sunday evening. See this for details. And go to our Forced to Choose site for lots of information about communities making choices.
