Advocates of a seasonal indoor recreational domed facility (also referred to as a ‘indoor turf field recreation facility’) made a presentation to the Edina City Council at a work session last week.  The Council will discuss the issue further at next week’s Council meeting.

    Griff Wigley says:

This July Strib article was mentioned in the meeting:

Cities, counties make the case for recreation

Amid high unemployment and cuts in aid, and to the amazement of many fiscal conservatives, cities and counties in the metro area are spending tens of millions to plan and build new or improved recreational and cultural amenities.

Golf course clubhouses are being expanded or studied in Apple Valley and Coon Rapids. A million-dollar playground has opened in Maple Grove. Expensive sports centers or domes are being studied or opened in cities from Woodbury to Savage to Vadnais Heights. Next year, Edina will shake up the water-park market with a million-dollar surf pool.

Officials offer a host of reasons for the seemingly odd timing, from the chance to build more for less in a down economy to the availability of stimulus funds to build core infrastructure that will last for generations.
